The book seems to tell the reader that crime and gangsters are the same thing because without crime you dont have gangsters and vice versa. The story is set in Edinburgh in 1828. NARRATIVE Every night in four friends (Fettes, the undertaker, the Landlord and the narrator) meet in the George to drink and talk. Fettes is an old drunken Scotsman but he is known to be clever. In his past he was a doctor and some people address him as one. He has a shadowed past and doesnt easily give in to a bribe. As the story progresses it starts to show that Fettes had a bad past. He knew Macfarlane in the past. Dr Macfarlane is shocked when he sees Fettes. Fettes studied medicine in his young days. The narrator is the one who finds out about Fettes past and tells it to the readers. Fettes was very clever in school and the teachers noted this he acted and behaved mature and was a good example for all the other students. He got lodged by Mr K in a room above the dissecting room his task was to open the door for body deliverers and pay them for the bodies. These bodies were the ones used in the dissecting lessons and they were usually homeless people who wouldnt be noticed or missed by any if they vanished. The body snatchers were usually gangsters or in some way affiliated to the mob. One day the body deliverers brought a body Fettes did what he usually did he checked the body if it was in good condition but this bodies was different it was of a girl and he immediately recognised her. He didnt know what to do so he paid the men and waited for Macfarlane to come. Once he told him Macfarlane told him that no-one would notice and that he should act as if he didnt know who she was. Even though Fettes was worried that someone would recognise her he still put the body out to be dissected. Every one got busy dissecting and no one recognised the girl. Fettes went to a popular tavern after work and met Macfarlane with a stranger named Gray. The stranger seemed to exercise a great deal of control over Macfarlane. Gray seemed to like Fettes and even told him about how he used to be a bad fellow. He ordered Toddy to get Fettes a drink or he would have to close the door. Macfarlane got angry because Gray called him Toddy and so makes a joke about dissecting dead friends. Gray ignores Macfarlane joke and invited Fettes to join them at dinner. He ordered a feast so great that it caused commotion in the tavern. After they finished eating Gray made Macfarlane pay for the feast. The three men then went around the taverns drinking, when Fettes left the group Gray was heavily drunk and Macfarlane wasnt happy for getting made to use his own money to pay for Grays expenses. At four oclock Fettes heard a knock on the door when he opened it he was surprised to find Macfarlane in a gig with a body bag. Inside the bag was a dead Gray Macfarlane told Fettes to take the body and pay him. Fettes was hit hard by the shock and did what he was told. Fettes is confused and starts drinking. The amounts of bodies available start decreasing and so the two men went into the country side to dig up dead farmers wife who died recently. The light started getting dim and it started raining. The got to the grave and so started they digging it didnt take long before they got to the casket.

Most Fun Classes to Take in College

Most Fun Classes to Take in College Certain college courses have a bad rap. You know the ones: Organic Chemistry, Quantum Mechanics, Calculus III. Not to say that college students are lazy or that doing something difficult isn’t worthwhile but, with these classes, you’ve really got to want it. Take many of the same topics that make upper level Sociology (or Literature or Math) so unappealing and approach them from a different angle and you’ve got students lining up around the block to sign up. You have to admit that The Sociological Implications of Tattoos in American Popular Culture makes sociology sound down-right interesting. Below are eight more classes we’d stand in line for. The Art of Walking The Art of Walking is about more than just walking – although ambulation does play a major role in the course work. The Art of Walking weaves together pedestrian travel, history, philosophy, and sight-seeing into a course that’s about more than the sum of its parts. Tree Climbing This course teaches students how to get into the canopy of a tree, climb around, even to move from one tree to another without getting back to the ground. Students will also learn how to use technical climbing gear and ropes to reach the top of any tree. At the end of the course you will be able to reach any heights! Age of Piracy For those interested in learning more about the art of pirating, this course offers a detailed examination into the real, often unappealing, lives of pirates. Not all of them were as exciting and romantic, as the life of Captain Jack Sparrow. Lego Robotics Children all over the world are familiar with Legos and all the wonderful things they can build with the plastic toy. Now, a college course investigates how these bricks can be used to build real robots. What robot would YOU like to build? Game of Thrones The immensely popular television show based on George R.R. Martin’s popular books is now a college class. This course aims to teach students how the skills that are used to study literature can be put to use examining television as well. Also find out what the book-to-screenplay adaptation process is like. Nuthin’ but a â€Å"G† Thang This course examines hip-hop masters such as Run DMC, Nas, TuPac, Biggie, Snoop, Dre, Scarface, Wu-Tang Clan, DJ Screw, A Tribe Called Quest, and Grandmaster Flash in an attempt to learn about the history and variety of the genre and its effect on the music industry and culture. The class covers artists from all periods and the major genres within hip hop beginning with its roots with the Grandmaster Flash and Sugar Hill Gang all the way to Lil Wayne, and everything in between. Ice Cream Short Course Learn all the small details of ice cream manufacturing and witness the creation of this delicious treat as it goes from cow to cone. The program instructs students in the fine points of ice cream making on a commercial level. There might also be some practical studies where you can actually take a bite! Feminist Perspectives: Politicizing Beyonce This course focuses on how Beyonce has used her lyrics and celebrity status to illustrate issues regarding sexuality, female empowerment and gender. The course includes readings by prominent black feminists including Bell Hooks and Octavia Butler. The Science of Superheroes Comic book readers around the world are already familiar with discussing the finer points of Superman’s flight. The reality of the Silver Surfer has been debated for decades and Wolverine’s claws is always a popular topic at parties. Now the discussion and debate has moved from basement to college classroom and students can do it for college credit. The Science of Superheroes uses the popular genre to teach real lessons about physics. Though you probably wouldn’t want to pursue a Ph.D. in the art of walking, it certainly could make for a fun way to satisfy you physical education requirement. And though you might not major in Game of Thrones, it could be an interesting way to fulfill the Literature part of your degree. Keep an eye out for these interesting classes, give them a try, and you might learn more than you think.

Is there any connection between terrorism and religion Research Paper

Is there any connection between terrorism and religion - Research Paper Example The aim of this paper is to establish that no religion of the world advocates violence and terrorism, and that there is no connection between the act of terrorism and religion, regardless of what the media or the authorities might have the masses believe. Generally, there are two schools of thought among the population: those who believe that it is religion that spreads ill will among people, and therefore, the only solution is to eradicate the concept of religion in order to attain world peace; and those, although in minority, rightly understand that religion of any kind has no relation with the spread of terrorism, and therefore, the only solution to a stable society is religious tolerance and social education (Shattuck, 2008). To assume that religion is at the foundation of rebellion and terrorism, and hence, to fight against any religious activity, is an effort in the wrong direction. Belief, of whatever kind, is at the core of human existence (Shattuck, 2008); it is imperative that man would believe in and submit to a higher power, regardless of the nature or identity of that power. It is, therefore, impossible to strip mankind of this fundamental concept and act, as it is ingrained in the very nature of man (Shattuck, 2008). It is, moreover, for this very reason, extremely easy for the miscreants to motivate people on religious grounds, as religion is often a sensitive and volatile issue (Shattuck, 2008). By presenting a twisted and wrongful picture of religion, and by misinterpreting the religious text, the terrorists have been able to recruit many young people, especially young males, into their ranks (Hassan, 2009). The fact that it is

Finance - Securities Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Finance - Securities Analysis - Essay Example www.facebook.com and a home page will appear to request you to put in your credentials that are if you have an account in. Alternatively if, one does not have an account you can still register for one by following basic steps. Simply I can invest in facebook. This is because facebook can guarantee you a triple income of what you invested. By selling a single share at $38 facebook has a returning market cap of $104 billion. Just for the record, at the time of the actual IPO opening when NASDAQ was printing shares one could see them post at the Etrade Market Depth tab. Mind you, trade had actually not yet begun, and so what Etrade staff told me was "these were trades being entered". I believed that. The share prices ranged from ask and bid at 45 to 60, then jumped to 100, then 150 and finally 200. The asking price for FB at about 11:20 to 11:30 was 200 bucks. At some point this morning the SEC stopped trade because of short sellers. But whats getting missed is that many buyers, some of them had to be institutional, were willing to pay as much as 200 bucks a share on the IPO offering time. Why do I know this? Both the Market Depth tab and also NASDAQs staff member confirmed, this is "what customers were will ing to offer". NOW then, whats Facebooks valuation? The short sellers were trying to get the stock to below 30 dollars IMHO when SEC stepped in today the 21st. That indicates their willingness to resort to whatever means are necessary. This climate of criminality and greed is working against not only stock investors but also the USA itself. Holding 200 shares for a recovery, (NOT acquired the enormous price btw) and may buy more if they go down again tomorrow. On the 21st shares dropped to 33.00. They may fall more, but the markets too are in a moment of volatility regardless of the one Monday up to date. This was bank stimulated, and when the terrible news seeps back from across the pond again, right back to square

Comparison of Heroes in Flood Stories Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Comparison of Heroes in Flood Stories - Essay Example He was also mentioned in stories depicting episodes of his drunkenness and the ensuing "Curse of Ham." (Wenham, 2000) Noah's story was greatly influential in the West and was the focus of much elaboration in the following Abraham-ic traditions. In Islam, Noah (Nuh) is believed to be a prophet of Allah (God) (Khan, Anand, & Anand, 2001) and Christians likened the Christian Church to the Ark of Noah (Wenham, 2000). Noah in the book of Genesis lives for a total of 950 years, with the great flood happening in his 600th year. In Quran, Nuh (Noah) is already 950 when the great flood happened and was told to have spent his lifetime preaching the belief that there is only of God (singleness of Allah) (Wenham, 2000). In later stories, only 83 people are willing to become Muslims (submit themselves to Allah) and only these 83 people were saved with Nuh. Mankind's stubbornness ultimately brings God's wrath on the non-believers (Wenham, 2000). In Quran, the theme of the flood story is the need to seek peace with and the unity of Allah. The element of the account focuses totally on the great flood, and does not include the accounts of episodes of Nuh's drunkenness. The "Curse of Ham" story's likelihood is in fact totally disqualified: Quran's Nuh has two sons, not like the Christian Bible's three, and that son does not follow his father despite Nuh's ultimate plea for salvation, "O my son! Come ride with us, and be not with the disbelieve

Concern on environmental issues worldwide

Concern on environmental issues worldwide There has been a rising concern on environmental issues worldwide nowadays. Ministry of foreign affairs statistic shows that over the years, the temperature has been rise because of carbon dioxide trapped and green house gases have affected the global climate. This change will affect the people live all over the world. This also includes access to water, health, food and the well being of the environment. Todays consumers have started to recognize that their purchasing behaviors actually cause a big impact to the environment. Therefore, companies should practice offering environmentally friendly products and service to people to prevent this world become worse. Although, Malaysia has undergone an excellent development followed governmental efforts to attract foreign investor to come and invest for a green product development in Malaysia, the action of environmental responsible behavior among Malaysian consumers are still low. One of the examples of the lack of environmental responsible behavior is shown in an article in Bernama whereby garbage thrown by one of the state in Malaysia residents is the main cause of river pollution in the state. According to a survey which was handled on by global market insight and information group, only 8% of Malaysian respondents responded that they have changed their behavior in a greatest deal to benefit the environment on the aspect of eco-friendliness of habits and behaviors In addition 83% respondents reported that their views on a companys and their Colleges friendliness to the environment would influence them to purchases a green products and services. Studying the determinants of generation-Y consumers green purchase behavior will be definitely benefit green marketers. Generation-Y (also known as a millennial) is defined as A label attributed to people born during the 1980s and early 1990s. Members of Generation Y are often referred to as echo boomers because they are the children of parents born during the baby boom (baby boomers). Because children born during this time period have had constant access to technology (computers, cell phones) in their youth, they have required many employers to update their hiring strategy in order to incorporate updated forms of technology. In a simple word, generation-Y grew up with a technology and relies on those things to perform their job and their task. In addition, when going through a literature review in Malaysian context, there are still a gap existed between environmental knowledge, intention and behavior towards green product. [Said et al. (2005)]. Even though people that have vast knowledge about green products are not necessarily would buy a green product. Therefore, factors those determine and affect Generation-Y to purchase a green product would be worth to find out. 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE RESEARCH Environment is defined as what surrounds a thing or an item or in other words it means the surrounding. It could be a physical element which is physical environment, that includes the built environment, natural environment such as air, water, land, atmosphere and etc or it could be human environment where people surrounding the item or thing which also known as the social environment. Today environment is getting worst and worst. Many environmental issues arise. Environmental concerns have been growing in recent years. One of the examples of environmental issue is global warming. Global warming and climate change refer to an increase in average global temperatures. Natural events and human activities such as burning garbage and waste are believed to be contributing to an increase in average global temperatures. This is caused primarily by increases in greenhouse gases such as Carbon Dioxide. The greenhouse effect keeps the earth warm when functioning normally. For the first time in h istory, human activities are altering the climate of our entire planet. According to (Jack, 2010), in less than 2 centuries, humans have increased the total amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by 25% from the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of forests. In addition to the natural fluxes of carbon through the Earth system, human activities, particularly fossil fuel burning and deforestation, are also releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (The Carbon Cycle; the Human Role, Earth Observatory, NASA). Green product is define as a product that produce limited carbon footprints; they may require fewer resources to produce, consume less energy or emit fewer hazardous emissions.  Green product is also a product that is non toxic, water-efficient, and also recyclable and biodegradable. There are many green products that have been produce for people in the market. For example, a household cleaner. Nowadays its nearly impossible to go shopping without finding a plethora of products that claim to be environmentally and consumer friendly. Oddly enough, many cheap and eco-friendly substances, such as vinegar, have been used for years as home cleaners. Whether you buy a green cleaning product at a store or use something on hand in your pantry, you can reap the benefits of choosing products that are gentler on you and the environment. Phosphate-free dishwasher and laundry detergents are also consider a green product because they do not discharge environment-damaging phosphates into waterway s. Other examples of green cleaning products are those labeled certified biodegradable; these have passed several stringent tests relating to biodegradability and environmental impact conducted by an independent certifying agency. According to Consumer Reports, the certified biodegradable label is more meaningful than a general biodegradable label. Glass and metal cleaners, kitchen and bathroom cleaners, and laundry detergents are products that might carry this label. The rationale for going green is twofold. Clearly, the positive effects on the environment are a key driver for purchasing green product.  Green product provides myriad environmental benefits. They can replace toxic materials that may be harmful to people or animals. Also, some products save energy and water, while others limit solid waste and manufacturing releases. Green products create a healthier environment for people through reduced exposure to cleaners, solvents, paints and other hazardous substances. Green product also can reduce allergies. Many families find that their children are suffering from allergies, even though their family history does not necessary say that there are no allergies. In some situations, chemicals found within cleaning products contain allergens. Bleaches, toxic cleaning sprays and other chemicals used to clean the home commonly contain a variety of ingredients specifically able to cause or trigger allergies in people.   Generation Y are the cool generation, they embrace brand and live in the new world of digitize communication. Thus that might be interesting to find their perception and their level of awareness towards environmental issues that the world is facing nowadays. Gen Y has grown up in a very structure, busy and over planned world. Also, Gen Y is made up of confident, optimistic young people who feel valued and wanted. In a article of science daily, Gen-Y is a people that will go all the way when it comes to saving the environment as long as it benefit to world economic and environment. They are maturing into a pragmatic generation that wants to do the right thing for the environment but also has real economic concerns 1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT Consumers or practically customers are the sellers and buyers that boost the countrys economy. Therefore, many firms are actually putting many efforts in order to attract more customers because these customers create businesses opportunities and generate profits to them. As the world nowadays facing so many problems regarding to an environmental issue, the consumers and their attitudes or behaviors to purchase a green product are the important factors to be considered. Consumers nowadays have more choices due to the effects of globalization. They will prefer the function of the product rather than the brand or whatsoever to ensure a healthier future. To determine the current level of Gen-y consumers preference towards the green products. To determine what are the determinants or factors of Gen-y consumer preferences towards the green product. To determine the consequences or effects of Gen-y consumer preferences towards the green product. Apocalypse Now and Heart of Darkness Essay -- Literary Analysis

The idea of intertextuality can be seen heavily in Apocalypse Now as it based on the story and ideals within Heart of Darkness. The characters of Apocalypse Now are direct references to characters in the novella, and through their actions and ideals, serve nearly the same role. The first parallel we see between characters is that of Willard and Marlow. In the opening scene of the movie, Willard is complaining about wanting a mission and getting back into the war, stating â€Å"Every time I think I'm gonna wake up back in the jungle. When I was home after my first tour, it was worse. I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said "yes" to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle. I'm here a week now, waiting for a mission, getting softer; every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker, and every minute Charlie squats in the bush, he gets stronger. Each time I looked around, the walls moved in a little tighter.† (Apocalypse Now) Willard is being driven mad by his need to be involved in the war, to the point where it is affecting his home life. Simply being in his room waiting for a mission is making him become paranoid to an unhealthy ext ent in which he feels the need to become intoxicated and self destructive to cope. This obsession correlates with Marlow’s own obsession with work in Heart of Darkness. Like Willard, Marlow’s sanity also relies on his work. The first major break in his mental state we see is when he is unable to do work due to his steamer being damaged and not having the parts to repair it. Upon hearing the news that rivets necessary to repairing the steamer are on the way, the normal stoic Marlow bursts ... ...e you. And suddenly he'll grab you, and he'll throw you in a corner, and he'll say "Do you know that 'if' is the middle word in life?’If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you'..." – I mean, I'm no, I can't – I'm a little man, I'm a little man, he's, he's a great man† This speech is extremely similar to that of the one Marlow is greeted with, which shows how Apocalypse Now uses nearly the exact same device as Heart of Darkness to show Kurtz’s effect on people. 1. Why do you think that it is so important to cultivate guanxi and guanxiwang in China? Guanxi and guanxiwang are essential to business in China. It is an important mechanism for building long-term business relationships and getting business done in China successfully. Because China is a big country for mechanism.By establishing connections in relationships would help do a better job and mechanism; and the society of China lacks a strong rule-based legal tradition, thus guanxi and guangxiwang is becoming a necessary and regulations Guanxi is based on reciprocity, which is the undertaking of higher authority to accept an obligation to return a favor in the unspecified future whenever they benefit from the guanxi network. The development and expansion of the guanxi is a form of social investment that enriches the executive's resources and future potential. The importance of cultivating guanxi and guanxiwang in China is to realize the imperativeness of personal connection between two in dividuals who are bounded by an implicit psychological contract to follow the social norms of guanxi. The norms include self-disclosure, dynamic reciprocity, and the long-term equity principle. Establishing connections in relationships would help do a better job in completing an assignment and may be able to bend the rules for a temporary time period. The society of China lacks a strong rule-based legal tradition, thus guanxi and guanxiwang is becoming a necessary and important mechanism for building long-term business relationships and getting business done in China successfully.2. What does the experience of DMG tell us about the way things work in China? What would likely happen to a business that obeyed all the rules and regulations, rather than trying to find a way around them as Dan Mintz apparently does? As we look through the case of DMG in Shanghai, we recognize the influence of guanxi more apparently.Dan Mintz, the founder of DMG, had no prior experience in the fields of ad vertisement. He had no contact in China, even no Mandarin language. However, he had guanxi with two young Chinese who have connections with people of various levels. Making their connections as bedrock of the company’s guanxiwang, they were able to emerge as one of the China’s fastest growing advertising agencies. DMG shows us that culture is an important thing in China. Guanxi refers to the business connections that are so important to companies doing business in China.Guanxiwang refers to the relationship network that companies cultivate. Both of these are important to the Confucian ethics – loyalty, reciprocal obligations, and honesty in dealing with others – that drives business in China. Dan Mintz believes that guanxi and guanxiwang are important because they help companies get around restrictions that limit the ability of companies to function. It also is very useful when you have a business that delivers a good job; they bring the message over what gives you the opportunity to get good assignments from major companies. So a business in China without the relationships network is doomed to fail, because if you can’t work around the law and have doors opened for you it is almost impossible to get a successful business. China cares very much about its culture, especially because its rich history goes back centuries around 500 B. C. The DMG experience in China shows that culture as an imperative factor when conducting business there: foreign or domestic. The guanxi and guanxiwang factors are very important pieces of China’s culture. Both are essential to someone who is trying to start a successful business in China.Even though DMG may have obligations with higher authority, it has helped them to get a good reputation and support for the future, especially when meeting connections, such as with Bing Wu and Peter Xiao. When relationships are created in China, it helps businesses work around the laws and policies and it can open doors for any business that normally cannot be conducted anywhere else. Overall this is an advantage that DMG was able to acquire due to the fact that Wu was a recognized national champion and Xiao has political connections. . What are the ethical issues that might arise when drawing upon guanxiwang to get things done in China? What does this suggest about the limits of using guanxiwang for a Western business committed to high ethical standards? Guanxiwang plays a crucial role in business ethics, specifically referring to Western businesses moving to China. According to the case, it is impossible to get anything done without an intermediary, a third party introducing how to do business in China. In this case, for example: Bing Wu and Peter Xiao. Chinese will simply not do business with strangers unless someone is able to draw guanxiwang, which is the intermediary in the networking circle. As indicated in the case, the reciprocation obligations almost like a bribe, for exampl e, I’ll hit you and you hit me back! Business ethics in China rests upon a rich and diverse cultural moral heritage that emphasizes personal virtue and a right ordering of personal relationships in social organization and institutions. There are several ethical issues that can be provoked by drawing upon guanxiwang (Hill, 2009, p. 105). First of all, there will not be many business opportunities. For those who are starting up a business, guanxi companies that exist can be barriers for entering a market. For example, the existing businesses can use guanxi to initiate confrontations among them or to acquire restricted rights for using essential facilities to operate business activities from the government. Overall, it might hurt the system of free market competition.

If I were to make a recommendation it would be for the Government to increase funding so as ACES could expand their services and assist more people with disabilities to achieve a better quality of life.SUMMARYSome General Public perception of a disability: A service user who differs from the norm are often perceived to be of less value by some of the general public. People often deny feeling this way but it does happens. Because of this attitude disabled people are likely to be denied opportunities to gain respected roles. They may even be rejected or persecuted.Service users best learn to do anything by doing it in the place where it really happens and with people who usually do it. For prejudices against disabled people to fade, the general public needs to have positive experiences with disabled people. "Personal social integration, valued social participation".ACES is filling this role by encouraging and assisting the consumers to access everyday activities. In doing this the general public are then given the opportunity to be educated in the understanding of people with a disability and see that they are not to be feared or shunned - but accepted, encouraged to "join in" and included in conversation. When the general public have positive experiences with disabled people the "unknown fear factor" towards someone who is "different" will hopefully be eliminated.Bibliography ·Adult Community Education Service (ACES) - handout brochure ·Integrated Care Management Learning Material - Disability 2000

Critical Analysis of Huck Finn essays

Critical Analysis of Huck Finn essays Case Study of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn The articles that are presented below explore adverse techniques of criticizing literary works. These critiques will be broken down to identify what technique of criticism is being used and what aspects correspond with the guidelines of that specific criticism. The criticisms identified below are psychoanalytic, cultural, and formalism criticisms. Society and Conscience in Huckleberry Finn: This article explores the depths of Hucks unconscious acting on the influence of his super ego. Levy examines the realms of the river signifying freedom and the banks symbolizing societal conformity and bondage, which Huck is reluctant to submit to. Also, this criticism fixes Pap as a symbol of natures depravity being conformed by community itself, which is the reason for a major part of Hucks scorn. Without the influential parental figure Huck resorts to establishing a relationship with Jim to compensate for his fathers incapabilities. Hucks relationship with Jim is, in this criticism, a result of his father having a lack of influence in his life, and Jim in a way replaces that kinship. Their relationship is shaped also by their lack of freedom and their struggle to obtain this right. Huck and Jims escape is explained as a release from the restrictions and pressures of conformity within society. Obviously there are racial tensions throughout this novel, but Huck and Jim ov ercome this obstacle by overlooking their differences and developing a close relationship. Both of these characters exhibit rebellious tendencies, which also contributes to their relationship. Hucks freedom is psychologically based rather than geographical. This freedom is a need to elude those stern guardians of authority and also the influence society has on people. Hucks conscious forces the effect of alienation caused by not only depression but also problems with his se...

Research paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Research Paper Example Street literature is a genre involving an insightful look into the ghetto life (Morris et al. 20). The stories of â€Å"Midnight: A Gangster Love Story,† â€Å"Midnight and the Meaning of Love,† and â€Å"The Coldest Winter Ever† all fall within this gangsta realism that makes readers experience the high price of ghetto life through the characters. Street literature typically involves people from the African-American descent, and the main characters are usually mid-teens to mid-20s in age. They are usually depicted as people who go through extraordinary struggles in life, and they survive through obstacles such as violence, racism, and severe poverty. The whole story is filled with ghetto language, and this is more formally known as the African American Vernacular English (AAVE). The setting is usually in urban areas, and hip hop culture is the dominant scenario. Themes usually revolve around prostitution, premarital sex, illegal sex, crime, drugs, abortion, viol ence, and other illegal activities. The three novels mentioned above circle around such themes, and they are set within the urban hip hop milieu. However, despite such seemingly negative backdrop, these stories could serve as cautionary tales, and one does not need to go through the same experiences to learn what the characters learn in their life's journeys. The morals involved in the narratives are usually insightful in terms of understanding the, and learning from, the high price of ghetto life (Wright 42-45). â€Å"Midnight: A Gangster Love Story† is authored by Sister Souljah. It discusses the life of Midnight, a Muslim black immigrant from Sudan. In the opening lines of the book, Midnight is described as a tall guy with a dominating personality. He is pure black, and even his eyes are jet black. He is also described as lean and muscular, and females want to always be near him. Midnight is such a strong character because he never feels intimidated or insecure. Midnight i s a fierce fighter inside and out. Being a fighter is one common characteristic among the main characters in the three street literature novels (Brooks and McNair 129-132). Midnight's young life goes through a process of being sheltered and protected under his father's care, to being vulnerable and open to the dangers of a foreign neighborhood. His character is developed by his experiences, and he bravely surpasses obstacles throughout his teenage years. First, due to hardship, he becomes home schooled, and he escorts his mother daily to and from her sweat shop job. Second, to develop himself, he learns martial arts, and he also becomes a talented basketball player. Third, to get over poverty, he begins to earn his own money through a fish market job, and he helps save up to purchase a bigger house for his family in a less dangerous neighborhood. He gets over hindrances towards his family progress and personal development, that is why even language barrier does not deter him from wi nning the heart of a Japanese beauty named Akemi. His character is shown even further development as he adheres to his strict Muslim principles while courting Akemi. It can therefore be said that surviving one hardship after another makes Midnight who he is in the novel, and makes him a striking protagonist in this street literature (A Gangster). As a further backgrounder, Midnight is a boy who flees Africa at

Discuss the key features of effective corporate decision making and Essay

Discuss the key features of effective corporate decision making and assess how well these are being applied in an organisation y - Essay Example ...................................... 5 Learning from mistakes................................................................................. 6 Cultural sensitivity........................................................................................ 7 Conclusion................................................................................................................ 9 References................................................................................................................ 10 Executive Summary Effective decision-making is based on several qualities. These qualities include: innovativeness, diversification, learning from mistakes, and cultural sensitivity. Innovativeness is based on the ability to come up with new products and to market these products successfully. Diversification is based on the ability of the company to market different products and not be concentrated on only one or a few products. Learning from mistakes is about making the adjustments a fter issues in application and decision making have been seen. Cultural sensitivity, on the other hand, is about considering the culture of the corporation and making decisions based on such culture. In relation to Apple Corporation, they were able to meet these elements when they established various innovations and were able to establish a diverse market. They also learned from their mistakes throughout the years and re-employed Steve Jobs to reinvigorate the company. As a result, they have risen among the ranks of the most profitable and powerful corporations in the world. Corporate Decision-making Introduction Successful and effective corporations have distinct qualities and decision-making processes which often help them occupy such positions of success. These features are often distinctive to each corporation, based on their goals, activities, marketing, as well as the qualities of their consumers. This essay shall evaluate literature in order to establish the key features of e ffective corporate decision-making and assess how well these are being applied in an organization I know well. It will first present several studies and literature on effective practices of corporations in their decision-making activities. It will then discuss the application of such practices to Apple Corporation. Lastly, a summary and conclusion will evaluate the different elements being discussed in this paper on corporate decision-making. This essay is being carried out in order to establish a clear and well supported assessment of corporate decision-making, including the qualities which make for successful practice. Body Innovativeness In the current age of high stakes competition among businesses, various strategies and features are apparent for corporations seeking and keeping success. One of the qualities seen among these successful corporations is that they are major innovators (Morris, Kuratko and Covin, 2010). Successful corporations are distinctly set apart because of th e innovations they seem to constantly introduce into the market. In a paper by Uotila et al. (2009), they discuss that in order for corporations to be successful, they need to balance exploration and exploitation activities. In effect, as they explore and establish various innovations, they also need to temper their impact on society and on the environment. Their power to introduce new products and to explore new activities is at the very forefront of their success, and their ability to minimize their impact on the environment and on society is also a required
